Headteacher’s Update…

Dear Parents and Carers,

WISH TREE wishes…

School Council assembly – World Kindness Day

Well done to the school council, who, led by Mrs Britt, delivered an excellent assembly to the whole school on World Kindness Day about being kind. All of the school council members were confident, professional and articulate. This assembly follows a month of promoting kindness across the school by making posters and rewarding acts of kindness.

Careful driving at drop off and pick up

However busy parents are, please remember to prioritise the safety of all at drop off and pick up times.  The speed limit on the back playground is 5mph because of the fact that pedestrians do walk across the playground to access their vehicles or the minibus in the staff car park.

Last week, a staff member’s car was scratched by the black car belonging to a school parent and no note was left.

Free School Meals & the Pupil Premium

The pupil premium is a grant paid to schools to support the provision of education particularly for disadvantaged pupils.  A pupil premium grant may be paid for different reasons but the most common reason is because of the household income being below a certain threshold and the child(ren) being eligible for Free School Meals.

Therefore, if there are families eligible for Free School Meals, it ultimately benefits the school financially and the children academically.  This applies even if your child already receives infant free school meals.

If you are in receipt of one of the following benefits you may well be eligible for Free School Meals:

  • Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods)
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guarantee element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit) and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

To find out more, visit:

https://www.hants.gov.uk/educationandlearning/freeschoolmeals/juniorsecondary

You can complete an application form at: https://apply.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/hants . This tool will tell you if you’re eligible.

Clubs

The Priory Choir Club has started for Y3-6 pupils after school on Mondays. This club is led by Mr Smith who is an accomplished musician and has big plans for the school choir.  There are still spaces available and it is not too late to join. If your child is interested, please contact the school office@priory.hants.sch.uk.

Our clubs programme is designed to complement curriculum learning as well as giving pupils the chance to try new experiences, or pursue their talents.

Well done to the children who finished their boxes at Maker Club

LSA position

We will soon have a vacancy for a full-time Learning Support Assistant at The Priory. If you are interested in this position, or know someone else who might be, please visit the vacancies section on our website www.theprioryprimaryschool.org.uk where you will find all details.

Remembrance Day

As a school community, we showed our respect for the many people who have given their lives in the wars on Monday, along with the rest of the country. We were lucky enough to have Mr Smith playing ‘The Last Post’ and ‘The Reveille’ on the trumpet live at 11am to mark the beginning and end of the 2-minute silence.

We sold out of poppies and remembrance day merchandise raising money for the British legion.

News from the Sports Desk

NETBALL NEWS…

Monday afternoon saw the netball team head to Silchester CE Primary School for our first away game in the league. With the first league match under our belt, we were feeling confident and the nerves a little more settled. The Priory took the lead in the first quarter 2-0, but it was Silchester who were leading at half time 3-2. After a thrilling first half, it was all to play for in the second. With a fantastic third quarter from The Priory, we were in the lead 5-3 with just one quarter to go! Some outstanding attacking and defending play in the last quarter finished the game at 5-5. A huge well done to both teams for demonstrating some really fantastic netball, as well as great teamwork and sportsmanship!

TAG RUGBY NEWS…

Yesterday our new Rugby Squad for 2024/5 set foot on to the pitch for their first four games in our local league. With new Year 5 members on the squad, the whole team set the standard for the year with a brilliant display of confident running rugby. Our Year 6s set the standard as excellent leaders and role models for the less experienced players. The passing and game understanding was exceptional and it is clear that they have worked hard in their training sessions with Coach Zack. Every player was an absolute credit to their coach and our school. I look forward to taking them to future games and I have great hopes for them in the end of year festival! Well done Squad! Mrs Adams

News from Year R…

What have we been learning about in Year R this week?

The children enjoyed listening to the story ‘Augustus and his Smile’. Linked to the story they all thought about different times they might have lost their smile and also discussed the different things that can help them to be happy again. They discussed what the tiger looked like and came up with some interesting words to describe him. The children also made some tigers and tiger masks using paint, tissue paper and coloured pens/pencils. These are going to be used to make a tiger display in the classroom.

In Maths the children have been exploring the language of equal to, more than and fewer than. They all particularly enjoyed the party game set up where they had to make sure that all children had the same number of items so they were all equal to each other. The children were also very helpful at supporting Mrs Ewins with her counting when she kept getting it wrong.

The children have now all been told their roles in our Christmas nativity. We have also started to learn some of the songs too. On Thursday the children were sent home with a piece of paper that had their role on and if they needed any clothing to bring in for their costume. Children that are saying something in the nativity should have also come home with any lines so that they can practise them at home. Please do let us know if you haven’t received any of these.

Next week:

The children will continue their learning about tigers and discussing and writing about some facts they find out about them.

In Maths the children will begin to explore composition by focusing on the preliminary skills: the concept of ‘wholes’ and ‘parts’. By investigating their own bodies and familiar toys they will begin to understand that whole things are often made up of smaller parts and that a whole is, therefore, bigger than its parts.

The children will begin practising for their nativity. We are going to run through the play so the children know the running from beginning to end. They will also be practising their lines and the songs.

Please remember to make a comment in your child’s reading diary once they are confident on the sound and HRS word trees. We won’t test them in school or give them the next set unless you have let us know your child is confident on the previous set. Thank you to those of you who are already doing this. It is certainly making a difference to your child’s progress in Phonics.

Please ensure that your child comes into school with a warm, waterproof coat every day. Now that the weather is getting colder we will still be going outside. If your child does get particularly cold they may also want to bring in a hat, scarf and gloves. These should all be named to ensure they do not get lost. Thank you in advance.

Have a lovely weekend.
