Headteacher’s Update…
Dear Priory Parents and Carers,
Attendance
Thank you so much for making sure your child is at school every day and on time. The teachers have commented on a marked difference with this, particularly with everyone being punctual in the morning – it is much less disruptive if everyone is in class on time.
As a school our attendance is currently above national averages.
Parent welcome meetings
Our parent welcome meetings were well-attended this week. I hope these were useful for parents to see how your child’s class will work. If you missed the presentation, the slides will be emailed out to parents as soon as possible.
As always, please email the school office on office@priory.hants.sch.uk if you have any questions or would like to book a meeting with a teacher.
The settling-in meetings (where you will have time to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher individually) will take place between 2.30-5.30pm on 9th and 10th October. Sign up details will be sent next week for these meetings.
Student Leadership
Mrs Britt is in charge of leading our student leadership programme this year. The House Captains and Sports Captains have already been selected.
Well done to…
KESTREL: House Captain is Fearne and Vice Captain is Elsie
HAWK: House Captain is Hetty and Vice Captain is Poppy
FALCON: House Captain is Tilly and Vice Captain is Aurelia
Sports Captains are:
KESTREL: Cassidy and Chloe
HAWK: Josh J and Kyra
FALCON: Harry
Elections will take place next week for the esteemed Student Council and Eco Council positions. 2 children from each class will be elected for these positions from each class from Year 2 to Year 6.
SPORTSDESK
A big well done to the twelve Year 2 athletes who were selected to represent our school in the Year 2 football tournament at Cheam School on Thursday this week. There were no rankings in the tournament as scores were not recorded in the matches. Our teams played exceptionally well and did the school proud.

News from Year R…
What have we been learning about in Year R this week?
In Phonics the children have been reviewing the sounds s,a,t,p. They have been practising to form these letters correctly, thinking about words that start with these sounds and reading words containing these sounds. Your child will be coming home with their first reading book today. This book contains the sounds that have been taught in school so far (s,a,t,p). There are a couple of words in the book for your child to blend the sounds to read. Please encourage your child to read the book a number of times across the week. We will then be changing the books on a Friday each week. Please comment in the reading diary when your child has read at home.
The children have been practising to write their own name this week. They have been thinking about recognising their name and forming the letters correctly in their name. This will be an ongoing process which we will support the children with on a daily basis.
The children have been talking about their favourite food and learning about everyone else’s favourite foods. Chocolate, pasta and fish and chips seemed to be a popular choice in the class!
To end the week the children have been discussing their special people. They have also been drawing pictures of their special people.
Next week:
It is the Year R parents Phonics workshop on Tuesday afternoon at 2.15pm. If you are unable to attend on this day we will be sending out the PowerPoint slides and some ideas for supporting your child with their Phonics at home after the workshop.
In Maths we will be focusing on numbers 1-3. The children will be encouraged to quantify sets of objects by subitising (knowing the number without needing to count).
The children will begin learning about our first core text ‘Aaargh Spider’. The children will be making some spider craft and finding out some interesting facts about spiders.
Have a lovely weekend.
