Headteacher’s Update…

Dear Parents and Carers,

WISH TREE thanks…

  • To The Hughes, for the Year R Chalkboard, arrived today!

Authorised vs unauthorised absence

I communicated to parents about changes to national guidance around Pupil Attendance at the start of this academic year. I am pleased to say that school attendance at The Priory continues to be above national averages. We are also well below the national average for pupils who are persistently absent (meaning their absence is above 10%). This, in effect, means that more of our pupils are in school learning every day.

One aspect of (in)attendance that I would like to clarify is the practical difference between authorised absence and unauthorised absence.

Authorised absence – A child is absent from school due to a valid reason, like illness, a medical appointment, a religious observance, or an authorised holiday. Holidays will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances and this is rare.

Unauthorised absence – A child is absent from school for an unauthorised holiday. This does not mean the family is forbidden from going on holiday, but it does mean that if they do go, their child(ren)’s absence will be recorded as unauthorised and if this adds up to 5 days (10 sessions), it will very likely incur a fine. Other reasons for unauthorised absence include arriving at school late (after the register has closed), or unexplained absence, so we encourage you to check your child’s attendance certificate to ensure their are no “Unauthorised Absences” marked with “No Reason”.

We want the children to be in school as much as possible. However, we realise that absence requests sometimes need to be made. If you are ever unsure about whether your child’s absence will be authorised, please contact the school office.

Behaviour focus

Our whole school behaviour focus next week will be ‘Table manners’.  Well done to Alyx from Year 5 who did a very good assembly about table manners earlier this term.

Please support us by discussing and practising this with your child at home.

News from the Sports Desk

Key Stage 1 Multiskills Festival

Ten of our Year 1-2 children had so much fun on Tuesday afternoon at the KS1 Multi Skills Festival. They took part in a range of different activities that focused on their fundamental movement skills. Some of the activities included throwing bean bags into a hoop, completing an obstacle course including crawling through a tunnel, shooting a ball into a hoop and using a hockey stick to guide a ball around cones. Well done everyone! – Miss Hollingshead

News from Year R…

What have we been learning about in Year R this week?

The children learnt some interesting tiger facts this week. They learnt that tigers are the biggest animal in the cat family. They also learnt about where tigers live, described their features, what they eat and also learnt that they can camouflage and are also endangered. We then spoke about what ‘camouflage’ and ‘endangered’ means.

The children were all very excited to run through the whole of our nativity and sing all of the songs. They are looking forward to getting into the hall next week to practise it on stage.

In Maths we have been looking at ‘parts’ and ‘whole’. The children have been thinking about different objects and thinking about what the different parts are to make the whole object e.g. a felt tip pen (the whole) has 2 parts – the pen and the lid. We have also been discussing our own bodies and thinking about ourselves as a whole and all the different parts to our body. We have also enjoyed singing ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ to think about the different parts of our bodies. The children have also enjoyed playing a ‘Guess the Whole’ game where part of an object was revealed and the children had to guess what that object was.

Next week:

We will be practising our nativity on the stage for the first time. The children will be learning their part in the play more and begin to understand when they need to be on stage. Please do continue to practise supporting your child at home with their lines in the play. This will help them deliver their line on stage more confidently.

In Maths the children will develop their understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the numbers 3,4 and 5. They will investigate part-whole relations e.g. seeing that 3 (the whole) can be composed as 1 and 2 (the parts).

As it is coming near to the beginning of December the children will be helping to create an interactive advent display in the classroom.

Have a lovely weekend.
