Lost Property & Weatherproofing

We have a lot of lost property already this year. Please ensure all of your child(ren)’s belongings are labelled.

Please also ensure your child has a coat if any rain is possible in the forecast. One of our school values is resilience and to develop this we still take the children out when it’s cold or raining lightly.

News from Year R…

What have we been learning about in Year R this week?

Thank you to all of those that attended the Phonics Workshop on Tuesday. We do hope that you found it useful. You should have also received the PowerPoint slides by now too so if you were unable to attend please do look through them. If you do have any questions about supporting your child with their Phonics at home please do let us know.

In Phonics this week the children have learnt the sounds I,n,m,d. They have also learnt the Harder to Read and Spell words a, I, the and no.

In Maths the children have been exploring the numbers 1,2 and 3. They have been learning to subitise, which is when they know the number without needing to count. They have been exploring different pictures showing 1,2 or 3 objects and discussing what they see e.g. there is 2 windows or there are 3 triangles on top of each other.

We started our core Text ‘Aaaargh Spider’ this week linked to our new topic on ‘Minibeasts’, which we will be focusing on until half term. The children all enjoyed listening to the story and sharing their experiences of Spiders. They have made a spider craft which has created a wonderful spider and spider web display in our classroom. The children have also discussed different spider facts such as spiders have 8 legs, jumping spiders can be colourful and cobwebs are sticky which catches flies for the spiders to eat.

The children have been sent home set 1 sounds and HRS words this week to practise at home. Once your child can confidently say all the sounds and read all the HRS (Harder to Read and Spell words) please comment in the reading diary. We will then send home the next set. Please do let us know if you have any questions about this or if you need any further support.

Next week:

We will be continuing with our text ‘Aaaargh Spider’. The children will be describing the spider and thinking about how it felt in the story. They will have a go at writing a simple word to describe the Spider’s feelings. They will also be carrying out some spider activities like catching spiders from a spiders web using tweezers and making a spider headband.

In Maths the children will be focusing on counting and developing the understanding that counting tells us ‘how many’. They will also be learning that the last number in the count tells us ‘how many altogether’. They will also practise counting objects and will develop their 1:1 correspondence, by counting numbers at the same time as moving each object they are counting. The children will be introduced to a ‘counting wand’ to help them with their 1:1 correspondence.

Thank you to everyone that has commented in their child’s reading diary this week. We have been handing out house points to the children, which they have been very excited about. We will continue to give out house points for reading that your child has completed at home so please do make sure you comment in the reading diary when they have read at home.

Have a lovely weekend.
